What to visit

Castilla la Mancha has a wealthy cultural heritage. Many of the historical sites are under the protection of UNESCO World Heritage and some of them are Toledo and Cuenca. Toledo keeps a huge historical wealth within its walls - the remains from the Roman, Arabic, Visigoths, Jewish and Christian periods. It has many beautiful cathedrals, the Alcazar fortification, monastery of San Huan, synagogue of Santa Maria, mosque del Cristo de la Luz and many museums. Cuenca is a perfect mix of the ancient and modern styles. The most visited sites in Cuenca are the Plaza Mayor, the City Hall and the Cathedral of Our Lady of Grace. Almaden was an important economic center in the 18th century due to its mines. The Miners Hospital San Rafael is a building from that period, and today it has been converted into a museum. It is also under the protection of UNESCO.

Another beautiful place to visit is certainly the Castle of Siguenza. This castle situated near Villavieja has a very long history. It was built in the 13th century and it has many lovely towers. Its interior is decorated with frescoes all over the walls and ceilings.Near the town of Fuencaliente is the Batanero cave, discovered in the 18th century. It has well preserved paintings of different shapes in red color.The City of Calatrava La Vieja is a remarkable place to visit as well. This city was built by the Arabs. It has a long wall with many towers and it was built in the 8th century.Another ancient site in Castilla la Mancha is the Sopetran monastery. It was built in the 7th century by the Visigoths.
